Gorges Dragons is the name of the competitive racing team of the Ithaca Dragon Boat Club. For those not familiar with the Ithaca area, a popular t-shirt and bumper sticker slogan around town reads "Ithaca is Gorges" (read: Ithaca is gorgeous), a reference to the local geography. Receding glaciers over the last 2 million years not only carved numerous gorges into the local landscape, but the paddling home of the Gorges Dragons, Cayuga Lake, as well.

The Gorges Dragons debuted their competitive spirit at the Hong Kong Dragon boat Festival in NYC in August of 2005, and have since competed in numerous festivals in the northeast including New York City, Hartford, Philadelphia, Princeton, and Montreal. In addition, the Ithaca Dragon Boat Club hosts its own festival in July of each year on the Cayuga Lake Inlet. Dragon boat clubs from NYC, Philly, DC, Boston, and elsewhere travel to Ithaca to race in 250m, 500m and 2000m distances. In recent years, the Gorges Dragons have earned medals at various festivals including:
  • 2009 Great White North Challenge – Princeton, NJ: Gold Medal Mixed Team B Division
